Pirate TV
Since Pirate’s launched I’ve been talking to a few people about doing something on TV or on screen with the book. A few months back Mark Kotlinski and John Carluccio from Current TV did a piece on it, and I really hit it off with them. A while later I had the good fortune to meet Jesse Alexander out in LA, the Executive Producer of Heroes, who also had some amazing ideas for it. So John, Mark, Jesse and I got together to produce the short piece above, just for kicks, just to see how it might work. Let us know what you think…

The Pirate’s Dilemma…
Matt Mason, author of The Pirate Dilemma (which I am currently reading) made a very good video trailer getting the word out: Piracy has always been a major part of history, with not only bad but many good consequences such…

Love the vid, alot of interesting stuff in there that you wouldn’t realise.
At best we won’t have Artists/Actors who show up in anti-piracy adds reading off a load of rubbish information.
Piracy makes near to no money, let alone does it mean we become drug manufacteurs or dealers, or worst of all, terrorists.

Great Idea Matt. I really think the public would benefit from exposure to the facts and stories in your book and I wish you all the best.
If you have a spare moment, check out a short film I made as part of my final year at University. It covers similar areas as well as looking to where the future of the music industry will most likely lie.

[...] It seems that Jesse Alexander is teaming up with Matt Mason, author of The Pirate’s Dilemma for a show about modern-day piracy and how fundamental it is for today’s society. For those not familiar with the book, Mason makes an argument that the open source culture that we now have with info sharing is changing the shape of economies and breaking down walls that allow easier access to software, music, television shows, and other forms of media and technology. According to a post on TorrentFreak, the show will aim to educate folks on how piracy has been an innovator in our society and how it will shape our future. A teaser of the show can be found on TorrentFreak as well as Mason’s own blog. [...]

I think this TV show is an excellent idea. I really hope this gets off the ground. I think the MPAA and RIAA should embrace the freedom of piracy distribution models, despite how hard it will be for them to do.

Rethinking “intellectual property” laws are very important in the 21st century.

Timely idea. But I agree with earlier blogger on the question of how to parlay this into a regular weekly program–as on the surface it makes for a great special or investigative piece on a magazine show.
I think, as a programmer, that the key to impacting the illegal act of piracy is to redirect the focus of the campaign, with emphasis on the consumer as a victim. I believe too much is put on the poor, sad movie producer/actor/studio (who is barely making it on $22,000 per hour), and therefore the sensitivity to the cause of eradicating piracy goes “out the window”. As a consumer, I would respond more to the direct impact piracy has on me–what’s it costing me. If there were a stigma which made piracy “uncomfortable” for me, or an incentive to me for reporting such activity, I would be more apt to get involved.
An example is the IRS program whereby people “jealous” of their neighbors getting large returns through unscrupulous means can call an anonymous hotline to report such issues…and get a tax break of their own. More later.

I just ordered the Pirate’s Dilemma, which seems to be the perfect answer to all my thoughts recently about the impact of internet piracy on the future of communication and advertising. The video, was well made and should be circulated.
Make it viral.
